Preparing Credit Cards for the Holidays

During the holiday season bargain and discount signs fill almost every store around the city. If you’re an enthusiastic holiday shopper, this could only mean the best time to shop for Christmas. But before you delve and lose control in buying presents, you must be ready financially first. Remember that it is always good to use cash because then you won’t have to face a colossal amount of debt come January.

But if you don’t have any savings and prefer to use the good old credit card then prepare your credit line. This way, you won’t risk overcharging and eventually maxxing out your credit cards. If either of the aforementioned do happen you’ll find yourself stuck in deep debt even months after the holidays have passed.

Pay off Existing Debt

First step in readying your plastics is by paying off your previous credit card debt. This debt might have been brought on by the Halloween season or other prior charges in the lead up to the festive season. If you allow this debt to stay in your record, you’re fooling yourself in to paying more than twice your original charges. Make sure that before Christmas shopping hits, you’ve already cleared out your past debts. By clearing your credit card of debt, you’ll now have a bigger credit line to use for holiday presents.

Set a Credit Limit for Yourself

To avoid overcharging and going over what you can afford to pay, make sure to set a limit for your shopping. For example, when you give yourself $1000 for all your Christmas presents make sure that you stick with it. Even if you’re using different credit cards in the course of your shopping, make sure to keep track of your spending. This way you’ll know when to stop if your self-imposed credit limit has run out.

Secure All Your Cards

It isn’t that far-fetched to say that this holiday you could be the victim of credit card fraud. With all the hoopla to distract you at Christmas time and at the shops, you’ll never know when a scammer will get access to your account information. Before you know it, they’re also shopping in your expense at the same time you’re busy purchasing for your loved ones.

To avoid this from happening, make sure that you always guard your credit card information when swiping. Make sure to tuck your cards away safely every after use. Have the number of your credit card issuer handy as well because you will need to call them as soon as possible, if you when lose your card.

When you have done these preparations, your credit cards are now more than ready for Christmas shopping. So get going!
