Credit Card Tips When Vacationing Abroad
If you’re traveling around the country, use cash instead of plastics. You’ll curb credit card debt this way and besides, the interest rates will only spoil what good memories you’ve made. But when you’re adventure takes you out of Australia, it’s a whole different story. You’d be better off using mainly credit cards while keeping an ATM card at a ready for instant cash resource. But before you set out on your trip, here are things you should do to assure smooth usage of credit cards abroad:
- Bring only the best credit cards. This means those cards which are acceptable in the country you’re about to visit and any other country in that region. The reason being is that some cards are widely acceptable in certain parts of the globe while others aren’t. You will want to make sure you can use your plastic when you need it so check their usability first.
- Know the fees, charges, and exchange rate for each of your travel credit cards. Issuing banks hold different policies and fees for transactions made abroad. They charge international service fee and it may come in flat or unfortunately high rates.
- Always carry with you the issuing bank’s or credit card provider’s telephone numbers. List down a toll-free number and other important hotlines. Examples are lost or stolen card contact number, technical support, information, and more. Store the information in your mobile, laptop, mp3 if you can, and a piece of paper. Make sure to bring these phone numbers with you all the time. Call right away when you need assistance.
- Prior to leaving Australia, make sure that you’ve informed your credit card provider or bank issuer about your travel plans. Be sure to inform them of the time of your departure, what country you’ll be going, and when you’re coming back. This way, they can monitor your card activity and block the account in case a suspicious trend occurs in your card usage. You and your funds will be protected this way.
- The most important thing to do, before you start packing your best credit cards, is to make certain of their credit limits and their expiration dates. You don’t want to get declined while on a different soil and trust me it could be potentially perilous if you do. So have all angles covered by making for certain your plastics work.
Be sure to keep note of exchange rates as well. Miscalculation of your available credit may lead to cash and credit shortage and it’s the least you want to deal with when you’re in a foreign land.
